How to Add Salt to Your Pool?

When the time has come to add salt to your pool, you need to know how much you should add, and what type should be used?

Steps for How to Add Salt to Your Swimming Pool.

  1. The general range of a salt chlorinator is between 3000 to 4000 ppm. Suppose, for example, the device operates at 3500 ppm, and then you need to add until the concentration reaches 3500 ppm.
  2. The next step is to determine the salt level in your pool. If your pool is new, then the ppm will be zero. But if it is old, then the salt concentration would be about 500 ppm.
  3. Measure the salt level of water using a test strip. If the reading is about 2.0, then the salt level is about 500ppm. We recommend that you take the water sample to a nearby pool store for testing.
  4. To know the amount needed, calculate the number of gallons of water present in your pool.
  5. Salt comes in bags weighing 40 pounds. So use according to the requirement. If there is any doubt, you can always contact the professionals of Canada Salt.
  6. Always use salt that has at least 99.8% pure Sodium Chloride(NaCl). Avoid adding anti-caking agents which cause discoloration of the fittings of the swimming pool.
  7. Do not pour salt bags directly into the pool. Empty the required amount into the shallow end of the pool and let it dissolve. Regular salt takes about 24 hours to dissolve, and finer grades dissolve faster.
  8. Turn on the chlorinator after the salt has dissolved and check for the ppm rating. If the desired ppm level is not achieved, then you need to add more.
  9. When you have calculated a requirement of 6 bags of salt, do not dump all the six bags at once. Check PPM after adding 5 bags, use the last bag if necessary.

When to Add Salt to Swimming Pool?

Like any other chemical, salt should be used only when the pool is closed. Add salt when the chlorine generator is not producing enough chlorine or not producing at all. The chlorine generators do not function correctly when the salinity level of the pool drops. This drastic swing results in undue stress and shortens the lifespan of the chlorine generator.

Avoid this problem by checking the salinity levels in your pool from time to time. Make it a daily routine to check the water using salinity strips or the digital meters available in the market.

How Much Salt Do I Put in My Pool?

The general question of every person is how much salt to be used? The ideal level is between 2700 – 3400 ppm. Make sure to check the Salt level before adding it. If the level is low, then you need to add salt to the pool. Determine the amount required based on the salinity level. Generally, the water begins to taste salty when the level of salt is between 3500 to 4000 ppm. The high level of salt makes the chlorinator to shut down, making the water salty.

The water of the pool is recycled continuously, and the loss of salt during the swimming session should be minimal. The water loss is mainly due to the splash out while swimming and the decline in salt are due to the addition of rainwater. It should be noticed that you do not loose salt by evaporation.

Most of the stores try to sell more salt than your requirement. You should make a proper calculation before buying it. A simple calculation can help you to get the number of bags needed for getting the required salt level. For increasing the salinity level by 1000 ppm, you need 0.5 bags for every 10000 litres of water.
